Karate Do Shotokan

The kiai or “spiritual cry,” as it is sometimes called, exists only at certain predetermined times in each kata. Karate-ka is required to demonstrate a total commitment of body, mind and spirit, and channel all available energy and apply it appropriately to the required technique. The kiai is a common thread that runs through all the main styles of karate.
